Santo Domingo, May 20 (Prensa Latina) Presidential candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Danilo Medina, called his fellow country people to go to the polls today.
Some 6.50 million Dominicans are expected to cast their vote to elect the president, vice president and seven deputies abroad.
Let’s show our civic-mindedness on this day and go freely to the polls, said Medina, who is also foreign presidential minister, on his Twitter account.
Medina also called to turn this day into a true fiesta of democracy.
Polling stations will be open from 06:00 local time (10:00 GMT) to 18:00.
The PLD is a favourite, according to surveys, but other five candidates are vying for the post, including ex president Hipolito Mejia, from the Dominican Revolutionary Party.
Mejia and Medina, expected to get most of the votes, vied for the presidency in 2000 and Mejia won and ruled through 2004, when Leonel Fernandez took office.
Abstention has averaged almost 28 percent in the country’s presidential elections of the past few decades.
