Alicia Alonso, Eduardo Galeano Receive 2012 ALBA Awards

aliciaalonso-egaleanoHavana, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso and Uruguayan intellectual Eduardo Galeano received the 2012 Alba Arts and Literature Award today in this capital, during the closing ceremony of the Third International Conference for World Equilibrium.

The jury, composed of renowned public figures from Latin America and the Caribbean, chose among 27 outstanding candidates for the award, established in 2007 by the ALBA Cultural Project of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America.

During the reading of the decision, Ecuadorian narrator and journalist Raul Perez highlighted the contributions of the winners.

In the case of the director of the National Ballet of Cuba, Alicia Alonso, is distinguished by her exceptional career of commitment to her people.

Galeano’s contribution to the formation of Latin American consciousness, whose works express the emancipating experience of the region, was described as invaluable.

The award is granted to artists who have devoted their lives and all their work to enlarging the cultural heritage of Latin America in the areas of thought, poetry, fiction, essay, music, visual arts, dance, theater and video production, among other significant contributions.
