Ecuador: There is No Summit of the Americas Without Cuba

ecuador_ricardopatinoQuito, Jun 11 (Prensa Latina) The Ecuadorian Foreign Affairs Minister, Ricardo Patiño, stated today there will not be a Summit of the Americas Panama 2015 without Cuba, an attendance that may not be restricted in any way.
During a press conference, the minister stated there is a regional consensus on the matter, which emerged from the meeting of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) held in the Ecuadorian Galapagos Islands, and in the Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) held in Paraguay.

“There will not be any exclusions in this Summit of the Americas, and I particularly refer to the case of Cuba, as well as we disagree on the imposition of limitations or conditions to its assistance” he said.

Patino made it clear it is not an Ecuadorian posture, but the position of the whole region, and the issue has already been debated with the Panamanian authorities, both the outgoing and the starter governments of the nation that will host the appointment scheduled for 2015.

Recently, the Ecuadorian President, Rafael Correa, confirmed his country will not participate in the Summit of Panama if Cuba is not present, just as happened at the last conclave meeting held in the Colombian city of Cartagena.

“A Summit of the Americas without Cuba is unacceptable, just as an Organization of the American States without Cuba was inadmissible, and that can not be tolerated by Latin America”, stated the president.
